MANU NATIONAL PARK


Introduction

The Manu Biosphere Reserve covers 4.5 million acres (1.8 million hectares) of the most pristine forest in South America, It is located in the southeastern region of Peru in the Department of Madre de Dios.

The Park has a variety of habitats that range in altitud from 1000 feet (300 meters) to 13000 feet (3000 meters),and it is ion these slopes that the forest is exuberant in all types of animal and plant life.

It contains about 1000 species of birds.

There are thirteen species of monkeys and a large variety of animals, jaguars, giant otters, the black caiman and many others.


It is in this environment that a large amount of orchids grow and thrive. At the moment there are about 2000 species recognised for Peru but it is believed that there might be more than 3000

It is not known how many species there are in such vast and unknown area as the Manu National Park. Let us see some of them.
