THE"LAS PIEDRAS" RIVER

The "Las Piedras" river (River of Stones) is located in the province of Madre de Dios, southeastern Peru, in an as yet relatively pristine rain forest region adjacent to the Manu Biosphere Reserve, inhabited by at least two, possibly three indigenous people. The Mashco-Piro and the Nahua have thus far tended to avoid modern "civilisation" following a series of traumatic experiences during the rubber boom of the late 19th century as well as recent contacts with logging and oil development companies.

Madre de Dios is one of the world`s last great wildernesses with an almost unparalleled richness in biodiversity. The total population of this remote corner of Peru is only 76,000 in an area encompassing 78,000 square kilometers.
